Your first treatment may wear off a little sooner, often closer to three months. That is normal. The muscles have been fully active up to that point, so they tend to recover a little faster.
With regular, well-timed treatment, many patients find their results last longer over time. The treated muscles are not working as hard, so the result can hold better. Sometimes that means four months or more.
But no prescriber should promise you an exact number of weeks. I certainly would not.
Anti-wrinkle injections usually last around three to four months.
That is the honest answer. But it is not the whole answer.
How long they last for you depends on the area we treat, the dose used, how strong the muscle is, how your body metabolises the product and whether this is your first treatment or part of a regular plan.

What are anti-wrinkle injections?
Anti-wrinkle injections are a prescription-only muscle-relaxing treatment.
They are used to soften lines caused by repeated facial movement, such as frown lines, forehead lines and lines around the eyes. A very small amount is placed into specific muscles so the movement relaxes. As the muscle activity softens, the skin above it looks smoother.
It is important to say this clearly. This is a prescription-only medicine. It can only be provided after a consultation with an appropriate prescriber. It should not be advertised by brand name, and it should not be treated as a quick beauty appointment.

How long do results last?
Most people can expect results to last around three to four months.
After a first treatment, it is common for the effect to fade closer to the three-month mark. That does not mean anything has gone wrong. It simply means the muscle is recovering.
When treatment is carried out regularly, and at sensible intervals, the muscle often becomes less active over time. Many patients then find the result lasts longer while still looking natural.
The aim is not to freeze your face. The aim is to soften the movement that is creating the lines, while keeping you looking like yourself.
Two patients can have the same treatment on the same day and get slightly different durations. That is normal. Your dose, muscle strength, metabolism and lifestyle all play a part.
This is why I do not treat from a template. The right plan has to be yours.
What affects how long anti-wrinkle injections last?
Several things influence how long your result holds.
The dose used
A carefully judged dose should hold well. Too little can wear off sooner. Too much can look heavy or unnatural. More is not automatically better.
The area treated
Stronger muscles, such as the frown muscles, can sometimes recover faster than finer areas.
Your metabolism
Some people simply metabolise the product more quickly. If your body processes it faster, your result may not last quite as long.
How regularly you treat
Consistent, well-timed treatment often helps results last longer over time. Waiting until everything has fully worn off each time can mean the muscle becomes fully active again between appointments.
Lifestyle
Very intense exercise, heavy sun exposure and smoking can all shorten results.
First treatment versus maintenance
First-time results can be shorter. Maintenance treatment often holds better once we understand how your muscles respond.

When will I see results?
You will usually start to notice movement softening within three to five days.
The full result normally settles at around ten to fourteen days. I always advise patients to wait the full two weeks before judging the final result.
This matters because checking too early can make you think the treatment has not worked, when it is simply still settling.
When the effect wears off, it happens gradually. Movement returns slowly over a couple of weeks. There is no sudden overnight change.
Will my lines look worse when it wears off?
No.
When anti-wrinkle injections wear off, the treated muscles gradually return to their normal movement. The lines you had before may reappear, but they are not made worse by the treatment.
In fact, many patients find that regular treatment helps stop those movement lines being constantly reinforced.
But again, this has to be done sensibly. Over-treating is not the answer.
How can I make results last longer?
The most effective thing is regular, well-timed treatment.
That does not mean coming in too often. It means returning when some movement is starting to come back, rather than waiting until the treatment has completely worn off. For most people, that means every three to four months.
I would not usually treat the same area sooner than twelve weeks. Results are often still present, and treating too frequently is not advisable.
You can also support your result by looking after your skin properly.
- Wear a daily SPF. Heavy sun exposure is not kind to skin, with or without injectables.
- Keep hydrated and look after your skin barrier.
- Do not smoke.
- Return at sensible intervals rather than waiting until everything has worn off.
But do not chase more. More product does not mean a better result. More frequent treatment does not mean a better result. The best outcomes usually come from a measured plan.
A typical patient example
A common example is someone who comes in because their frown lines are starting to make them look tired or cross, even when they feel completely fine.
When I assess them, I am looking at how strong the frown muscles are, whether the lines are only there with movement or whether they are present at rest, and how much natural movement we need to preserve.
For a first treatment, I may take a more cautious approach. We review how their muscles respond, how long the result lasts and whether the dose was right for them.
If the result lasts around three months the first time, that is not unusual. At the next appointment, we can plan maintenance more accurately.
That is how this treatment should be done. Assess. Treat carefully. Review. Adjust if needed. Not guesswork.
Is it safe to keep having anti-wrinkle injections?
Yes, when treatment is carried out by a qualified prescriber at appropriate intervals.
The key words there are qualified, appropriate and intervals.
As a general rule, I would not treat the same area sooner than twelve weeks. Spacing treatments properly is safer, and it also helps reduce the risk of the treatment becoming less effective over time.
This is why a consultation-led approach matters. You should not be encouraged to have treatment more often than you need it.
